The frequency of autoimmune diseases is steadily increasing in the westernized world. This trend applies to rheumatic, endocrinological, neurological and gastrointestinal autoimmune diseases. Thegeographical distribution pattern indicates a considerable influence of environmental factors which are however not well understood. Due to the increased prevalence of autoimmune disorders pharma and biotech companies work on the development of novel therapies to keep the immune system in check. New drug candidates and approaches will be presented here.
